Why do you believe this is better?  What is using DESKTOP_SESSION?  I
know all OpenDesktop compatible desktops use XDG_DATA_DIRS, and this is
the reason I believe it is a better choice.  What is the content of
XDG_DATA_DIRS in a LXDE session?

It would still be possible.  We could just see which program is
installed and use pcmanfm if it is installed.
