Look in http://www.pathname.com/fhs/2.2/fhs-2.html instead:

            shareable       unshareable
   static   /usr            /etc
            /opt            /boot
   variable /var/mail       /var/run
            /var/spool/news /var/lock

Shared variable data goes in /var.

Actually, from the link you have:

] instance, /var/log, /var/lock, and /var/run. Other portions may be
] shared, notably /var/mail, /var/cache/man, /var/cache/fonts, and
] /var/spool/news.

(well, really http://www.pathname.com/fhs/2.2/fhs-5.1.html, but near enough)

In particular, that's mistaken.

I don't speak for anyone save myself. GPG signed mail preferred.
