The FHS section on /var (http://www.pathname.com/fhs/2.2/fhs-5.html) does
not mentioned /shared/ variable data.  /var is machine-specific.  /com is
shared between machines.  Possibly this could live under /var/share (like
we have /usr/share), but it is not equivalent to /var.
