gnome-apt: installed, but won't start--why not?

I've gotten the impression that several people have installed this
program and actually run it.  I'm able to install it with apt-get, but
then:

gigan# gnome-apt
gnome-apt: error in loading shared libraries
/usr/lib/libgnome.so.31: undefined symbol: poptHelpOptions

What am I missing/doing wrong?
