My initial reaction to the "GIMP only" restriction was annoyance,
because I have a design that I wanted to resubmit, done with a
vector-based program (Canvas). However, I found I was able to work
around this by using Bezier selections, shapeburst fills, layers, and
cropping/masking. I think the result is as good as the Canvas
original[*]. The only glitch is that the resulting picture can't be
scaled up without showing its pixels. Actually, come to think of it,
that could be a serious problem in some situations.

[*] The one I did for this contest came out a bit sloppy, but as it says
in the README, it's only a sketch. I'll be happy to clean it up if
there's any interest, but I'm not going to spend hours tweaking a design
unless there is some positive response to its basic concept. I entered
this one in the previous logo contest, and the consensus seemed to be
that it was too likely to engender "horny penguin" jokes or some such
thing.... See the README on contest-gobbel-0 for my views on the
subject.
