Re: New APT version

Hi,

My techniques was to take the *.list files (5615K with 147703
files and dirs), ignore the non-directories, which brought it down to
33500 directories (lines) whose names comprise 953422 bytes. I then
looked at the du -S output. For each dir, the du -S output is 8
bytes prepended to the name -- a space padded size.

So it does not matter what the size is, really, except for
compression figures. Hence, I think my raw size figures 1221422 bytes
for my 1207 packages -- still is an accurate measure.

Extending it to the other (currently only 600 other packages,
but we should assume that the numbers maybe higher by the time slink
is to be released); I think that the raw du -S file should still be
1832133 Bytes, or there abouts ;-)

Now, your compression figures are a better estimate than mine,
so let us assume we do get a 4:1 reduction (I think htat means that
the gzippes size if 25% of the original, in any case, 25% is what I
 consider reasonable).

So, final size is of the order of 1832133 / 4 = 458033 bytes,
 or 448K.

Even at the higher compression ratios reported, This represents
a 35% increase over the largest package file we have, at 332K.
