Indeed -- let us not forget that Debian is distributed on physical
media, too. Such large games may indeed be unsuitable for distribution
through such channels like Debian.

This might be an extremist approach, but perhaps such games should
really be separated WITHIN the Debian project into a separate
repository. That way, mirrors can choose whether or not to download
such packages. Also they could then be recorded on a separate set of
physical media. It's also important to say that Debian is still
distributed on CDs. Unless DPKG supports multipart archives, it's
impossible to distribute such large packages on CDs.

(Or, in case of this package, it would take almost an entire CD.)

Perhaps someone should bug upstream to consider producing a smaller
version of the dataset. I'm sure they could strip some quality off of
textures, and kick some content out to produce VegaStrike-lite. Or
you, Vincent, could do that :)

We could have:
vegastrike-data
vegastrike-data-lite (provides: vegastrike-data)
vegastrike-data-full (provides: vegastrike-data)

vegastrike-data-full would be separately hosted (as suggested above),
perhaps by upstream following the
if-they-can-host-1gb-they-can-host-2gb-too logic" ^^

Just my two stupid, ignorable and completely irrelevant cents
