I just log in as root, it's much simpler. If you don't know the root
password just do
sudo passwd
and set one. Yes, I know you should never log in as root. I've been
doing it for 20 years anyway.
I don't think a window manager or whatever these things call
themselves these days cares about video drivers, that's between X and
the hardware. Do you have an xorg.conf file? Modern systems usually
don't need one, but you can specify a video driver in there.
