Hm, which version did you try? If you embed it in mplayer, it should
take the autodetected CPU flag... did you run ./configure?
I have put a slightly updated version of my source at
http://people.debian.org/~falk/mplayer-alpha-2002.05.11.tar.bz2
It should now compile on ev56 and does not require my hacked gcc :)
