There are trains by day to Italy indeed. Thanks, Enrico!

Since I depart from further away than a one-day train journey, I am
chasing routes involving at least one night train (but didn't mention -
sorry!). Night trains are more expensive, and slower than many trains
by day, but likely cheaper than alternative accomodation (except
obviously couchsurfing).

I just learned that several night trains are operated within Italy,
including one between Bologna and Bari.

Night train routes in Italy are listed at
https://rail.cc/train-type/intercitynotte/322 and timetable is at
https://www.italiarail.com/ (confusingly it seems you need to first do a
simple search, then _afterwards_ tick a box for "Overnight" at the right
side to reveal night train options).
