OTOH, is it really necessary for the DPL to have a strong opinion on
*every* issue? I know having an opinion on everything is good for IRC,
but is it good for leading a project and building consensus?

IMHO, and e.g., the non-free split thing is a time-wasting issue. I
don't think it buys anything, I don't think it really hurts anything;
I'm fairly ambivalent to the whole mess. I don't think it's unreasonable
that a DPL candidate might feel the same way. In that case what Branden
suggested makes sense: let's just have a vote and put the issue rest.
The only way we'll ever know how the developers really feel about the
issue is to vote on it. And in the end, the DPL really has very little
affect on which way people will vote on the issue. So why do people see
a need for candidates to make this issue such a major plank?
