AIUI FreeBSD 12 and prior use ZFS-on-Linux code, while FreeBSD 13 and later use OpenZFS code.

I tend to use the term "performance" to mean minimum processor cycles, minimum memory consumption, minimum latency, and/or maximum data transfer per unit time.
