BIOS booting needs¹ a BIOSBoot partition on a GPT disk.
It's not a BIOS bootpartition, because people use the
term bootpartition to mean a partition/filesystem that's
mounted at /boot.

UEFI booting needs to find an ESP somewhere. Which other special
partitions are required?
¹ There are risky ways of avoiding it, like putting the core image in
a filesystem and praying that it doesn't ever get moved.
