As I am not an IT professional or systems programmer, I can't be of
much help in building Debian.

But I can see bugs as easily as the next user, and I can do basic
troubleshooting. So I do fully upgrade sid almost every day, and have
contributed a number of bug reports. It's actually quite difficult to
be the first, but I can sometimes add a data point.
