And you have the microcode for your machine installed too?I'm only a User, but I have a combo that always works for me on all my machines and all my Debian/Ubuntu systems and that is PulseAudio and Gstreamer + Gstreamer and Phonon, I install pavucontrol too and I remove all VLC and it just works, I use Mplayer + Smplayer for playback of audio and video, system sounds work, internet audio works and it just works with HDMI too.
