and with its help I was going to examine my sound "stack" (is that the
word?) on jessie. I notice that I have a couple of scripts, for
example, with the said so-called obsolete /dev/dsp. But there are
differences of opinion there on pulseaudio, hence my need to take a
"critical view". No definitive opinion will be come forth; I might end
up with a tidier system.

Correct. Not all of us have the time to hunt down the reason for every
warning emitted. Jessie in particular has had showstopping moments for
me and I'm still fighting issues.

Good. The warning had worried me (and others) in the past. Somewhere I
read that alsamixer and aumix were fighting each other, which was
probably completely wrong. I might spend a few moments instead
considering whether aumix and pavucontrol are cooperating or
fighting. They definitely interact.

Well it's just possible that the OP, on getting the responses Yes and
No, is going back to his installer for advice. My posting was in reply
to Lisi.
In the absence of any other information, I'd guess unintentional
muting is the place to start. However, as pocketsphinx is run from
within a browser, I'd want to test the OP's statement "I removed it
without ever having used it." I have little idea what iceweasel and
chromium are running behind my back. Oops, another case of "I haven't
a clue what is happening and cannot be bothered to find out". Gotta go.
