Why is that? What do I need OpenGL for? I'd wager that any card with 4K
support would probably have a recent OpenGL stack, though.

Because once you have it, you'll want to play with it. And once you play with it, you will want to use it.

You also leave your system ram the heck alone, and use the quicker VRAM installed directly on the card(s). I've got 16 gigs of system ram and 4 gigs of vram (2 X 2 gigs) which effectively gives me ~total system~ ram of 20 gigs. I like that! Imagine trying to run 4 monitors at a decent resolution sharing it with system ram. You'd be crawling for sure. Again, this is for desktop usage. I would expect to make trade-offs using a laptop and do. That's why I have three dumped off in a corner, as I am spoiled. When the now $300 cards come down to $50 I'll replace these. :) Ric
