And just as with Microsoft upgrades it never realy quite workst just the way you thought it would work so.... Allways update the way described in the upgrade notes and that means one needs to have the release name like lenny, squeeze, etc. in the sources list and not stable so one can do a proper upgrade at the time of ones choosing.
