And the device too.  Here is a HOWTO I have considered following for running 
Debian using Nokia's kernel for the N810:

But some extra userspace software is required, hence 3 extra apt repositories 
for sources.list mentioned there:
http://repository.mer.tspre.org/
http://www.bman.maemobox.org/repository
http://packages.tspre.org/

Check out those links and guess how close I would get to running Debian with 
that HOWTO.
