audio not working on amd64 (was: Re: thinking of installing amd64 Debian ... )

Well, the audio has stopped working. I tried installing Ekiga last night
but couldn't get the echo test call to work. Ekiga reported that there
was a problem with the audio device. I tried USB headphones as an
alternate audio device, no luck.
At present, I am hearing the clicks after every several seconds on the
speakers (as I mentioned earlier above).
If I go to Settings->System Settings->Multimedia and do a "Test" on the
various devices, the motherboard's audio does produce any sound, but I
can hear the audio if I do it on my headphones.
The motherboard is M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 with chipset AMD 880G/SB850. Audio
hardware is Realtek ALC892.
The sound was working properly when I had 32 bit Debian Testing
installed till yesterday.

What am I missing here that the audio, that was working in 32 bit
Testing, is not working in amd64 Testing? Why am I getting those clicks
in the speakers? Have I missed some audio related packages? Or is this a
problem with amd64 Debian itself?
