This system is quite old, I don't believe any of the ports are USB2.

To be completely honest, I'm actually using my laptop to test since it's 
easier that going to the older desktop system.  There are USB2 ports on the 
laptop, I think, but the old system doesn't appear to have any.

If I can figure out the right combination of kernel drivers and userspace 
configuration on the laptop, I've fairly certain I can translate that to the 
desktop that I'm leaving with family tomorrow morning.

Is rndis_host for when you have Linux on a USB device you want to use from a 
MS Windows host?  That's unclear from the documentation I could google.
