If you don't know the exact name of a package but have a general clue
what could be in its name and package description, use 'apt-cache
search' followed by your search terms.
For example:
$ apt-cache search pam development
cvm-dev - Credential Validation Modules (development files, documentation)
drac-dev - Dynamic Relay Authorization Control (development files)
libdspam7-dev - DSPAM is a scalable and statistical anti-spam filter
libpam0g-dev - Development files for PAM
libsbuild-dev - development files for the Debian source builder
libsbuild-doc - development documentation for the Debian source builder
libsmtpguard-dev - Development files for smtpguard
libsrs2-dev - Development tools for the libsrs2
nypatchy - CERNLIB data analysis suite - patch pre-processor for source code
libspf2-dev - Header and development libraries for libspf2
fuzzyocr3 - spamassassin plugin to check image attachments
You probably want libpam0g-dev.
For "kernel development" you probably want 'kernel-package' and linux
sources are in linux-source-$version packages.
