Thanks Roberto. The /etc/default/saslauthd doesn't actually say that /etc/saslauthd.conf is *only* for LDAP, but the manpage does:
FILES /var/run/saslauthd/mux The default communications socket./etc/saslauthd.conf The default configuration file for ldap support.
