AIUI, Debian "lives" for stable.
Testing is where testing takes place for the next stable.
Sid/unstable is the developers playground, which may *intentionally*
break sometimes. Despite that you get reasonably up to date software it
is not meant to be run as such by the general populace.
"People tend to get aggravated" when they don't understand the purpose
of the stable/testing/unstable structure.

Don't forget to check that your /etc/apt/sources.lst entries point to
etch and not testing, otherwise you may end up with a broken system once
etch goes stable.
