I am using digikam in KDE and have successfully used Canon A520 and G5 with it. I think I might have used Sony Cybershot S40 with it, but I cannot be sure about that :(
I see no reason why other digital cameras would not work though. Everything should be just fine.
However, if worse comes to worse, you an always use a card reader to read the memory card.
