Thanks for the responses.  I was able to find some leftover 
Sylpheed parts in the the
directories and so reinstalled sylpheed and copied the 
directories and files over to
the new sylpheed dir.  Sylpheed has a nice command to rebuild 
the folder tree and
the emails are now easy to view and pick through.
