I changed them in Knoppix *and* in my chroot.

Same permission denied:

... knoppix
modprobe dm_mod
mount /mnt/hdc5
change permissions /dev/hda to brw-rw-rw-
su
chroot /mnt/hdc5
change permissions /dev/hda to brw-rw-rw-
su
lilo -v 5 or sudo /sbin/lilo -v 5 give the same permission denied.

Are there lilo guru's anyplace?
Is there a way to check whether one *has* root privileges?
