One of my boxes is exactly the same. It was running woody, now it's
running sarge (2.4). Worked like a charm with woody & windowmaker. Now
with sarge & windowmaker, I need to wait some minutes (maybe 5?) to
load X. Of course, Firefox and OOo take some time to start, too. But
it's useable. After start, it works quite acceptably. In fact, I'm
writing this on it just now, even if the other box is an Athlon 1800/
1 GB RAM... Not tried 2.6 kernel on the PII box, so I don't know about
wether it's faster than 2.4. If anyone knows about it, please let me
know.

Try sylpheed. It's ligthweight, and feature plenty. You could miss that,
even if URLs and addres are not higlighted, you can click on them to see
web pages on firefox or reply a mail. If you need a GUI file manager,
try endeavourII. Synaptic will work fine.
