Thank you very much for suggesting I give Yellow Dog a try. I hadn't really considered Yellow Dog recently as I converted from Red Hat a while back and after seeing dpkg w/ apt-get truly detest most RPM based distributions. However, the Yellow Dog installations provided some useful insight to the problem. Seems they were self-inflicted. That is that I was passing unnecessary (and it seems harmful) command line argument(s) to the Linux kernel in both my Debian and Ubuntu trials. I don't recall why I started passing the video option during my previous installation attempts. But, the video option I was passing (ofonly I think) appears to have been causing the problem. My recent Ubuntu installation seems to be working fine. Now to see what (if anything) can be done about the 802.11g wireless under Linux.
