Well I found out there was a backup copy of the status file and after fixing a 
few things I got that to work, so I dodged a bullet (having to reinstall 
Debian).  Debian is pretty easy to install nowadays, but it's all the 
additional software like games and non-Debian software that takes longer to 
install and configure.
