In Knoppix, I must use the ASDL/PPPOE Configuration tool (pppoeconfig
in the shell). This configured the network and what-not, enabling me

In Debian, I have tried this. It says the SCIOSIFFLAGS (or whatever, I
mentioned it above) was busy. In addition, pppoe sais that the network
was down.

I tried yoru steps: Didn't work. 3c59x wasn't listed. So, I went in to
pppoeconfig, chose NO and got to a place where I could install it. I
have tried this before: It failed yet again. It did, however, mention
and improper IRQ configuration as the possible source of error.

Right now, my Ethernet card seems is at IRQ 0. (By the bye, I have no
idea what that means: Hence the different verbs to describe what the
IRQ 0 is.). I am convinced that if I can change that, it will detect
and work.

So, how do I change it?
I doubt the IRQ 0 refers to your NIC. Can you perhaps copy and paste the actual error message and the surrounding messages?

You can probably find those messages after the fact by running "dmesg".

Also, try running "lspci -vv" for a verbose listing that might list the IRQ of your NIC.

Also, try "modprobe 3c59x" to insert the module into the kernel; perhaps it's not built-in after all (and as you mention above, it's not currently loaded as a module).

(PS: Let me strongly encourage you to keep messages on the list (and no need to CC: me as I read the list); this way, others who have similar problems can benefit from the conversation being archived, and others who have more knowledge than I can contribute to the conversation.)
