I run Debian sarge on a Dell Dimension V350 (Pentium II 350MHz) with no 
problems (well - nothing hardware-related anyway). I have also just installed 
sarge on a Dell Optiplex (Celeron 600MHz) for my church with no problems. 

Perhaps you could provide details of the error you are getting? Have you tried 
running memtest86?
