Assuming you don't use Ati's proprietary drivers, I'd guess that
something's wrong in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

You should check you /var/log/XFree86 log file for lines beginning
with (EE) which indicate a problem.

Here's my experience with a 9200 card. YMMV with your 9500 card.

With Sarge's or Sid's xfree and dual screen:
- DRI works in clone mode
- DRI does not work in xinerama mode or pure dual screen

With Xorg:
- DRI works in clone mode
- DRI works in xinerama mode with the MergedFB option (if I recall
  correctly the option name)
- DRI does not work in pure dual screen

I'm afraid I don't have many good news for you.

You may want to try ATI's drivers. But they are rumoured to have their
fair share of problems (I did not try them).
