You probably want to work from a vanilla kernel with the patch from
http://acpi.sourceforge.net NOT the debian-patched kernel. Do you even
know that your system supports ACPI? (i.e. have you used it before instead
of APM?)

I've found the acpi-support mailing list to be very helpful in trouble
shooting problems.

Note that you want the acpi-support list, not the development list.

It's *possible* your DSDT needs to be patched as well.
