The normal login does some sort of database updating that does a lot of disk access (find, sort, and updatedb show up in a ps listing. What is this for BTW?)

It updates the database that the "locate" command uses to find files on the system, as in "locate foo" or "locate mail". If you install/create some file since the last cron job that runs these commands, you can manually run the command "updatedb" at any time to update the locate database.
