My parents had a hard line about allowance: $5/wk. If I wanted more,
I got a job. Windows died. I was the sole computer user. Faced with
trying to find someone who had a copy of DOS7 and Win3.1, I decided
then was the time to do it.

Debian's well-documented installer sold me on it in 1997. Anybody who
complains about the installer didn't bother reading the instructions
first. If there's only one thing you ever check documentation for, it
should installing a totally foreign operating system. I imagine
trying to do so without checking through the manual first, no matter
what the UI, I imagine it must be a lot like driving with the
cardboard sunvisor still in the windshield.
