What kernel are you using?  Some 2.4.20-ck kernels had a memory leak in
the kernel...5, I think it was.

rcconf or update-rc.d.  Or editing the symlinks in /etc/rc2.d/ yourself
(Debian starts in runlevel 2, by default).
