I noticed a problem writing Java applets a couple of years
ago. The getScreenSize() method returned the size of the
virtual screen rather than that of the visible screen.
I stopped checking the screen size in my applets when I saw
this and served up something that would be all right for
800x600, maybe a bit awkward for 640x480 and pretty tiny for
larger pixel numbers.

So it may not be the programmer's fault that the screen
doesn't fit. Either he may be getting an inappropriate size
from X, or he may have realised that it wasn't worth asking
because the answer would be unreliable.
