Are you sure that KDM is the default window manager on the server and
that it is running. If you server is headless, you should
/var/log/kdm.log to see if it went up OK.

Other than to check the above, I can't think of a reason as to why it
wont work.

Search for XDCMP in google. This will return the pages from tldp as the
first link. Use the cache link to view the same page from google's
cache.
