There's the clue.  This is most likely a broken router (dsl modem, or
wireless router, or something) screwing with your MTU.  I've had the
same trouble at home since switching DSL providers; the new dsl modem
wraps in PPPoE and is somehow f-ing with path-MTU-discovery.  My
workaround was to set my mtu to 1492 when at home, and it works.  Your
exact situation may be different, but with the same symptoms, this
worked for me.

I'm guessing the testing update wasn't the only thing you changed today
... what did you do to the network?  ;-)
