I tried several CDs, and a few variations of the cdrecord options. Nothing

Did you try several CDs created with the new burner, or only one?
In case your CD has an error, you might very well be able to read it
with the old burner because it is a slow drive. The faster drives you
tried may have trouble reading it, while the new burner, though it is
fast, doesn't have trouble because it created the CD.
