more convient :) I suppose you could do some sort of dynamic dns thing
with DHCP ..or use DHCP but assign static addresses(what I do on my home
network, so I don't have to input the info when I install a box). If you
never need to connect INTO a machine I guess it wouldn't be as important,
but it may be useful for network monitoring tools. Of course, sadly many
broadband ISPs don't offer static ips.

yeah, configure once and forget about it ...(if it's retail I assume they
would configure the machine(s) with the software anyways, set the network
config and ship it out).
