I would actually edit your /etc/hosts file to change the servername. The line should say something like:

127.0.0.1 athlon athlon.fully_qualified_domain_name
and replace the fully_qualified_domain_name with your name.

I have left my /etc/hosts file as it was:
127.0.0.1	athlon	localhost

Is is a stand-alone box, so I think this is OK. Subsequent re-installations op php3 and php4 have not complained.
