Well, designing something like an MUA so that it works well
with other MUAs would seem to be the obvious thing to do --
unless you're of a particularly xenophoibic take-over-the-world
mind.

That would seem to be the common sense approach.

No it doesn't, but:

 1) There is a proposed standard (and only one proposed standard).
 
 2) Everbody else has implimented the proposed standard.

Anybody who claims they don't want to impliment the standard
until it's final is just being obtuse -- I suspect the real
motivation is to intentionally reduce interoperability in an
attempt to force users of Non-MS MUAs to switch to Outlook.
That's a typical position for MS to take.  I think it's bad for
MS in the long run, but they don't ask me about such things...

OK, I won't.   We're forced to use Outlook where I work.  So I
wrote a Python program that transfers my mail between Outlook
and my Linux machine.  Hey, I'm using Outlook -- I'm just not
using a mouse to do so...
