And now, with xpdf 1.0 in testing, the output it generates is
a thousand times better and quite comparable to that produced
by acroread.
In fact, I'm now in doubts if I should use the (pdflatex,
xpdf) combo or (latex, xdvi) for previewing my own texts.
One thing is certain, though: I will use pdflatex for
producing the final version of my texts.
