Hi Simon,

I installed a text only potato system and went straight to sid to get
galeon and evolution. Along the way, I rather carelessly installed X
with only the xfonts-base and 100 and 75 dpi fonts. So Freetype was
completely missing.

Your unix 7100 entry made me think I'd missed something pretty
fundamental along the way and I had. X was not using XFS. I didn't
have xfstt installed. the combination means that I was basically not
using the fonts that were on the disk.

thanks for taking the time.

Of courde I found it too late but there's a Debian Fonts minihowto on
the LDP site.
