those cd's sound suspicious/flaky.  

i'd troubleshoot the nic prob down 
to atleast having legit "potato" 
media--_valid_ cd's or download the 
flies (from http://www.debian.org)
for "base" install floppies.  i
believe i have the same nic.
...never had "recognition" probs. 

(doesn't http://www.cheapbytes.com
sell "potato" for like, $6.00?)

"...$40.00"?  ouch!  and it's 
_un-debian!
