Well, the prefs have to come from somewhere -- they may be compiled in,
they may be specified elsewhere, or you may have an extant XRDB already.
Try:
$ xrdb -query
...which will report on your current XRDB settings. There are a number
of tools for querying Xt applications to find out what resources they're
using. Some of them work better than others, I've found that the
situation tends to get muddled. Cheaper solution is just to set the
resources you want.
