If you are luckier than me maybe.  Does your PCMCIA slot support
CARDBUS?  Ordinally PCMCIA support in 2.4 kernel is just for cardbus
interfaces.  3c589_cs.o seems to be 16 bit driver.

So your problem may not be just a progeny debian transition.

Yep same here.  I run woody with 2.2 kernel.  I wish I can run 2.4 to
make this as transparent proxy. :-(

I did not read all of this thread.  Do you mean progeny kaenel package
has cardservice support.  Ooom.  I will check it out. :-)  There maybe
my answer.
