screen rocks!

It's not the same thing as virtual terminals, though it's got certain
similarities.  The real bonus is detachability -- you can launch a
screen session, detach from it, connect later (or from another
location).  You can even share one session between multiple users (fun
for showing a newbie tricks or doing support).
